Water lilies

All about water lilies

Commonly found in temperate and tropical climates in many countries around the world, water lilies or Nymphaeaceae are beautiful flowering plants that thrive in shallow, slow-moving bodies of water.

There are some 70 species of water lily, but only 9 are found in Australia. Fortunately, we have some beautiful blue and pink varieties. Though sensitive to the cold, water lilies are a beautiful and ornamental addition to the garden pond or outdoor water feature. As such they especially thrive in Queensland and northern parts of Australia. If you need help caring for water lilies, there are several helpful instructional videos that can be found online, but for expert advice you would need to consult a horticulturalist.

Water lilies are sold at hundreds of nurseries Australia-wide, and there are many varieties to choose from, within each species. When it comes to choosing suitable water lilies for your garden or property, the best place to do your research is online! Three sites well worth a visit are Oz Watergardens, Wallis Creek Watergarden and Watergarden Paradise.
